Revisiting resilience and thriving in the LGBTGEQIA + community: Conceptual issues and new directions

Individuals in the LGBTGEQIA + community continue to experience unique stressors to those in the dominant majority around discrimination and prejudice. These experiences may negatively affect LGBTGEQIA + mental health. There has been a dearth of understanding of LGBTGEQIA + positive psychology, and as a result, constructs such as resilience and thriving have struggled to be operationally defined. This has led to a lack of research and in turn, a lack of counselor access to information about fostering these qualities in their LGBTGEQIA + clients. This article reviewed current definitions of resilience and thriving and discussed current conceptual concerns related to their use in the LGBTGEQIA + community. This article also provided possible theoretical avenues to explore related to conceptualization and research related to resilience and thriving in the LGBTGEQIA + community.
