Various types of chromatographic materials, silica gel and activated alumina, have been investigated for separating silicon phthalocyanine compounds. The compounds of interest in this research are family silicon phthalocyanines where there are either one (monomer), two (dimer), three (trimer), or four (tetramer) phthalocyanine rings. The multiple rings systems are linked together by a bridging oxygen atom. During the synthesis of these compounds, some impurities are introduced as well as mixtures of family members (monomer to tetramer). It also showed that silica gel retained a loss of the compounds on the stationary phase and is not an acceptable choice for the stationary phase. As a future continuation of this project, proton NMR will be used to assess the purity of the compounds after the chromatographic separations.
